A Brief History of the Independence Monument

Unveiled on December 16, 1996, the Independence Monument stands as a testament to Kazakhstan’s modern statehood and its path to freedom. This remarkable creation was led by Shota Ualikhanov, a celebrated architect and a descendant of the legendary explorer Shokan Ualikhanov.

The project brought together a talented team of contributors, including sculptors A. Zhumabayev, N. Dalbayev, A. Boyrin, M. Mansurov, and K. Suranchiev, alongside architects K. Zharlygapov and Kh. Montakhaev, designer S. Kalamkarov, and engineer A. Ermegiyaev.

The monument’s location at Republic Square is deeply symbolic. It was here in 1986 that Kazakh youth protested against Soviet rule during the December Events, a pivotal moment leading to Kazakhstan’s eventual independence.

Architectural and Cultural Significance

The monument’s horizontal layout spans 180 meters, with a towering 28-meter vertical stele crowned by the iconic Golden Man, a six-meter figure symbolizing the resilience and spirit of the Kazakh people.

At the base of the stele, sculptures of Mother Earth, a wise elder, and two children on foals depict the continuity of generations and the unity of the nation. Horseshoe-shaped reliefs encircle the stele, narrating Kazakhstan’s history from ancient times to the modern era.

A particularly notable feature is the memorial plaque at the monument’s base, bearing the handprint of Kazakhstan’s First President. Visitors believe that placing their hand on this imprint can bring good fortune and fulfill cherished wishes.
