Theatre History

The Kazakh Academic Drama Theatre, named after the renowned writer Mukhtar Auezov, has been a cornerstone of Kazakhstan’s theatrical culture since its establishment on January 13, 1926. The theatre’s first performance was the tragedy Enlik-Kebek, written by Auezov himself.

Initially based in Kyzylorda, the theatre moved to Almaty in 1929 when the city became the capital of the republic. Over the years, the theatre has been housed in several iconic buildings:

• Early Days: Located in the Orion cinema and a staff club in Verny.
• Shared Premises: From 1941 to 1963, it shared a building with the Russian Drama Theatre.
• Modern Era: In 1982, the theatre moved to its current home, a purpose-built structure opposite the park with the monument to A. Imanov.

The current building was designed by architects O. Baymurzayev, A. Kainarbayev, and M. Zhaksylykov, with contributions from engineers and artists such as M. Plakhotnikov and I. Nemets. The square in front features a striking monument to Mukhtar Auezov, sculpted by B. Sergebayev in 1980.

Repertoire and Activities

Each year, the Auezov Theatre hosts over 200 performances, drawing more than 91,000 spectators. Its repertoire spans a diverse range of genres and themes:
