Description
Nauryz is one of the oldest holidays in the world, celebrated for over 3,000 years. Its origins lie in Zoroastrian traditions, symbolizing the start of a new year and the rebirth of nature. The holiday coincides with the spring equinox (March 21), when day and night are equal, representing balance and renewal. On this day, nature awakens: the first green shoots appear, trees bud, and the earth comes to life after winter.
Key Nauryz traditions include deep cleaning of homes, preparing a special dish called nauryz kozhe (a soup made of seven ingredients symbolizing abundance and well-being), and holding large public celebrations. People exchange gifts, reconcile past grievances, and participate in folk festivities such as kokpar (a horseback game), aitys (poetic duels), and other national games. A central feature of the celebrations is often traditional yurts set up in squares, offering food and showcasing cultural heritage.
In modern times, Nauryz is a public holiday in many Central Asian countries, including Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan. In 2010, it was added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list, and the UN recognized March 21 as International Nauryz Day. The holiday symbolizes not only the renewal of nature but also the renewal of human relationships—promoting reconciliation, kindness, and hope for a better future.
